Steve DeMent, who has worked with publications from Maxim to events with SXSW & marketing campaigns such as Elluminize, will be sharing with us his first experience with Austin’s Fashion Week. This is an intimate look into the behind the scenes & personal experiences of the much sought after up & coming photographer Steven DeMent.
By Teresa Miranda
Steve, tell us about your first experience with “AFW” as a photographer?
This being my first year as an “Austin Fashion Week” photographer, I felt that it presented some valuable opportunities to network within the industry. Overall, I was impressed with the extraordinary talent of everyone involved. From the designers, models, hair stylists, make up artists, & photographers.
Two designers stood out “Boudoir Queen & Savannah Red” by Anslee Connel. Boudoir Queen sizzled with anticipation that did not disappoint. Beautiful designs accented with Loubitons! Savannah Red was the biggest surprise. Being a plus size designer, which is typically not featured in Fashion Week events. It was a show that was filled with fun, high energy & confidence.
How do you feel covering AFW has contributed to your artistic growth as a photographer?
I would say learning to work in the real trenches of the fashion world. This means quickly, efficiently & many late nights. I definitely learned how to edit quickly & precisely.
Most pivotal moment: Capturing those candid behind the scenes moments. I learned to “let go” and discover the small moments that transpired into powerful moments locked into an image. Which is very special, because those moments you don’t have control over.
On a more personal note, I felt honored to capture a special moment for designer “Anslee Connel” during her final walk that exuded so much pride & accomplishment. It truly was the highlight of the week for me.
Speaking of the future, what projects are you currently working on?
AFW was very good to me & I am ever so grateful for the opportunities it has unlocked for me. Currently, I am working on a few shoots for various publications that I obtained through AFW.
I am anticipating “New York & Paris” fashion weeks in the upcoming future. As for publications, my next step is working with national & internationally known fashion publications such as “Zink, Genlux, & Lula.”
I am currently booking shoots for the many photography services I already offer that include: fashion, pin-up, editorial, & commercial. In addition to helping build models portfolios for fashion, I will be adding “actors head shots” to the list of services as well.

Elluminize blog: Behind-the-scenes of our latest video
In shooting this video, I wanted to show customers that Elluminize lashes not only stay on in water but that they are also very compatible with the active, outdoorsy lifestyle that so many Austinites share. And they can withstand the triple-digit heat to boot!
With the help of my wonderful film team of Lupe Nunez and Matt Trevino (of Luped Media), I think we were able to create a fun and informative video that got our point across in a creative way.
When I first met with Lupe and Matt, I told them that my goal for the video was to set Elluminize apart from the rest of the market while adding in the flavor of my own heritage. With those two factors in mind, we decided it would be fun to include elements from the Brazilian martial art Capoeira or some Carnaval Samba dancers.
After that, we hit the ground running with a storyline and some of the other big details like wardrobe and casting. We even incorporated the colors of the Brazilian flag into the costumes. From then on, we auditioned the talent — it was especially fun to interview some of the local Capoeira students and masters. We finally narrowed it down to a very talented student from Capoeira Evolução.
When the day of the shoot arrived, we began promptly at 6 a.m. and worked tirelessly through the 102-degree heat until 4:30 p.m. I don’t think I can think of a more authentic way to represent our message than by shooting in Austin’s Greenbelt on a hot summer day. After seeing this video, you can be sure that Elluminize lashes can withstand those conditions.
Luped Media was extremely professional throughout the entire process; and our fabulous models, Graduado Negro and Amber Kuhanek were also amazing individuals to work with. They never once complained, and they handled the heat and bugs out on the greenbelt like pros. As we hiked back up from our shooting location, I kept thinking to myself, “this better be worth 1 minute and 30 seconds.” — And it definitely was!
After nearly half a month of planning and almost a dozen meetings with members of our fabulous cast and crew, the video is finally complete; and I can honestly say that it far exceeds my expectations. I hope it blows you away as much as it did for me.

A woman should beautify her eyes because they reflect the truth of the world. The world needs Elluminize. Every woman will one day meet the man of her dreams and his reflection will be seen in her eyes. Therefore, if he sees something ugly its because he’s seeing an ugly truth about himself, and that isn’t desirable to anyone. If he sees beauty it is because he is seeing the beautiful reflection of himself.
Men often keep their hearts hidden from the world. They guard them with their life. Women should beautify themselves to soften the hearts of men. Women help men break down their high standing walls and that’s why women only appear more emotional than men.
Women should embrace beautifying themselves. It’s not a selfish act, a woman brings a smile to a mans face when she looks beautiful and more importantly, feels beautiful. That is attraction. And so the man goes on this journey to find himself. The woman is the guiding factor in the journey.
The capoerista is strong and hard and the woman’s eyes take him on this journey that softens his heart. They will come together at the end with a fairytale-like ending.
Please enjoy our web commercial. I hope you enjoy this video as much as we love making and watching the video!!!!

To prep for the shoot, Amber and I met Iana at Hearts and Robots Hair Studio. Iana is super cute and extremely professional. As she was styling Amber’s hair, we had a little “girl time.” This is one of the reasons why I love what I do. It never feels like work! Anyway, before we knew it, we were done. After that, we headed to Steve Dement Photography’s Studio on 6th St.
Upon arrival, Steve was already setting up his studio and getting the lighting just right. While he was doing that, I was finishing up Amber’s makeup with bold red lips. Mixed with the BIG hair that Iana gave her and some fabulous shoes, Amber was looking fierce! Next, it was time to let Steve work his magic.
The end result was a flashy yet chic look, complete with bright red lips, big hair and a fabulous sequined unitard.
Working with experienced professionals like Steve and Amber is always a pleasure. Lots of jokes and laughter while still getting work done… You couldn’t ask for a better team than that. What can I say, I love my career and am blessed to work with a professional crew. Thank you, Amber, Iana, and Steve
